The Rhum Line

The aimless and sometimes muddled route of a traveling couple looking for their next great adventure

Rhum line – The aimless and sometimes muddled route of a traveling couple looking for their next great adventure.

After twenty years in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, enjoying a mountain lifestyle and careers in real estate and the restaurant industry, we left in 2012 to travel to various tropical locales around the world. We spent time surfing in Costa Rica, paddle boarding in the Sea of Cortez, lounging on the beaches of Thailand and Indonesia, viewing wild orangutans in Borneo, going on safari in Sri Lanka and sailing in the far southern reaches of Myanmar. Returning to the United States in the fall of 2015 we decided our next adventure would be to explore the Caribbean by sailboat. Hence the nautical theme of this blog, which was started to track our course through learning to sail, buying a boat and setting off towards the islands. However, after taking lessons, shopping for boats and examining the associated expenses, we came to the conclusion that the cruiser life wasn’t for us. So we’ve continued traveling around the world, avoiding the cold and snow. We finally thought it was time to start writing and posting again. Hope you enjoy following along!

Hello Jim- This is Jeff, the guy in need of 100 Colones from the outdoor bar in Dominical. I just spent the last hour reading your blog and really enjoyed it! In fact I browsed all the way back to your close call in Java. Glad you got good advice from your friend 9000 miles away!
I think each of the blog entries are about right length and appreciate the occasional humor. Also love the pics. Are they from a dedicated camera or just your phone? I imagine you and Heather are in El Salvador now? Hope it’s going well. Good luck with your continuing world tour and I hope we can meet up again sometime, somewhere! I will check out your blog from tome to time. As I mentioned to Heather, if you ever travel thru Chicago pls do contact me.

    Take care,
    Jeff

Jeff – nice to hear from you and thanks for the kind words concerning the blog. Just a mental exercise for me that also keeps some friends informed of our travels. All the photos I use were taken by Heather, almost all with her Panasonic Lumix camera and some from her Iphone. You are correct about us being in El Salvador, at least for four more days. Have enjoyed driving around this little country. Currently on the Ruta de las Flores in the western part. Look forward to crossing paths again somewhere in the world! Jim
